Translation Pricing

Pricing for translation project is determined by three factors:

  • the number of source words
  • the complexity of the subject matter
  • the time required to complete the assignment

We do not base our pricing for translation on a fixed fee rate, such as price per page, or an hourly rate, but rather price per word fee. The main reason for using price per word is that we believe the fees are much fairer and transparent. By using price per page the client may over pay if there a few words on a page and under pay if there are lots. It also eliminates unnecessary administration converting documents to a standard format to accurately count the number of pages. The same theory holds true for price per hour. A faster more qualified translator is penalised while a less experienced translator is unfairly rewarded.

The first factor is the number of source words in the document. Due to the expansion and contraction rate when translating between English and Italian the cost per word for the source text in English is around 21% higher than the price per for an Italian source text.

The level of complexity for each project document is the second determining price factor. The more specialised the subject and language complexity the higher the price. As a guide, a general letter is at the lower end of the pricing scale, financial texts or culinary information mid range while legal, complex business documents or specialised scientific documents at the top end of the scale.

The third and final factor is the completion time. Pricing for rush translations is usually 30% higher. The usual completion times are are given below. Before we start work on a project we discuss your time requirements therefore ensuring that we can meet your deadlines.
